Nelsons Wildflower/Native Mix 1#

$10.99 / EA

Nelson's Native Grass and Wildflower Mix is made up of 25 species of native wildflowers and grasses selected specifically to provide food and habitat for our at-risk native pollinators. The diversity of species of wildflowers in this mix have been chosen for their staggered bloom times throughout the growing season, as well as their resilient ability to withstand the extremes of the Midwestern climates. Native grasses have been added to support added wildlife species beyond pollinators. One pound of this mix will cover approximately 800 square feet or provide roughly 30 native wildflower seeds per square foot and 15 native grass seeds per square foot. Under normal conditions, this wildflower mix may reach a height of 3 to 42 inches while the grasses will reach heights of 2-5 feet. Native grasses and wildflower species are slow to establish and do not always produce flowers the first year.

Planting Instructions:
Native grasses and wildflowers require landowners to develop a soil preparation plan to reduce weed pressure and ensure good seed to soil contact within the soil. The greatest barriers to establishing native wildflowers or native grasses is weed pressure and moisture availability. To reduce weed pressure use herbicides or timely tillage to control nonnative grasses or broadleaf weeds. Use early spring planting to utilize winter moisture, as well as promote early growth to wildflowers and grasses. Matching early weed control with early planting aids in success. Summer seeding can result in success but, requires timely rains or the addition of at least 1 inch of moisture weekly. Fall seeding although risky, can be performed in July and August with soil moisture and weed control still being important factors. Frost or frozen ground seeding can be performed thought the winter on bare ground. Late Fall weed control or tillage allows winter applied seeds to contact soil and naturally be drawn into the proper seed depth.

Seeds should be placed at a depth 1/8 to 1/4 inch by machine placement or lightly raked into soils. A lite compaction over the seed helps retain moisture and promote rapid seed growth.

Fertilizer usage is not recommended unless soils are excessively low in nutrients including pH.
